What Readers have to Say...
"What an accomplishment!...The world you create through vivid description takes the reader to far away and long ago places in a manner that lingers in the senses and manages to seem grounded and authentic - as if you yourself had seen these spaces with your own eyes...I fell in love with many of the characters."

This book is the realization of a dream Stephen had as a very young boy – he wanted to be a writer! Persuaded by his Mum and me to defer that urge, he waited till retirement to fulfill his dream, and by benefit of the knowledge and experience gleaned through the passing years, he has produced a novel which is both exciting and a sample of good writing. As a student, I knew of these events only as bare historical facts, but Stephen has added flesh and blood to the dry bones of history. I think you will enjoy his first novel as much as I did and will look forward to many more enchanting stories from his pen.

Thank you for all your hard work and creativity! I found the book hard to put down. I enjoyed your writing style and your word power! Your main character, John, had a special place in my heart. Was it because of his profession? Who knows? I also want to do some reading on the history of India during this time, something I know very little about.

I have finished the book and enjoyed it thoroughly. The author's portrayal of the main character,Dr John Holwell is brilliant. I hope some good film director is made aware of the book as it would make a great film with the right choice of actors.

Just finished reading The Other Side of Morning. The story kept my interest from start to ending. Well written and keeps the reader wanting to turn the page to follow the events. Cannot wait for the next novel to come out.

My husband insisted that I stop everything and read "The Other Side of Morning" as soon as he finished it. I had to put it off for a few days because of work, but once I started, it was hard to put down!
This really is a remarkable book about a most remarkable historical figure. Stephen has really done what few historians can accomplish; taken us back into a past period, and brought alive the people, the events, and the entire ambience of a very different time. One wishes that we could actually meet these people; the book makes us feel as if we know them.
Congratulations on a real tour de force! It must have required a huge amount of work. We look forward to Stephen's next venture back into the past! We will most certainly recommend it to all our friends and colleagues; I believe that sales at the Indian Amazon will soon zoom!

This book is about so much more than the events mentioned on the book jacket. It is about a doctor who is passionate about his work, about scientific discovery, about people and about India. Dr. Holwell's character is well developed as are the other characters in the book. The descriptions of being on the boats, of the Indian landscape and of key events are detailed and interesting. It was an absorbing read from start to finish. Not nearly as gruesome as the book jacket leads one to expect.

I have to tell you that I absolutely thoroughly enjoyed "The Other Side of Morning". What a great book! I purposely stretched it out over several weeks so that I could read it while I was "in the zone" and able to absorb every word. It became my evening routine while sitting by the fire. The amount of research the author did must have been tremendous. There is so much detail in the book covering all sorts of things. Besides being enjoyable to read, for me it was also a good education. I found myself really becoming transported to the age and events in the story.

The author's retelling of events that took place in a turbulent era of India is well researched. He provides an intimate and fascinating insight into the cultures, religion and status of the different factions that vied for India and its wealth. The story he tells is a vivid tapestry of the times. I enjoyed and reminisced every moment of turning the pages.
Well done! I look forward to your next book.
